How to get over audition nerves

Do you feel nervous before acting audition? Here are some tips on easing audition nerves:

First of all accept that you are feeling a bit nervous - it is completely normal. The pressure of audition can actually help you to perform better.

Practice meditation

Many actors practice meditaton regularly. Some of the many benefits of practicing meditation or mindfulness regularly is increased focus, resilience and feeling of relaxation. Mastering meditation can make you a better performer and can result in stronger performance in your auditions. If you would like to learn a proper meditation often a local Buddhist centre runs classes for public which are very cost-effective and taught by highly experienced teachers who practiced meditation for many years - note that you don’t need to be a Buddhist to attend the classes.

Do a breathing exercise when you are feeling nervous

Let’s begin by becoming aware of your breathing. Take a deep
breath in through the nose; allow your stomach to expand as you breathe in.
Hold the breath for a few seconds and then breathe out your mouth slowly,
allowing your body to completely relax on the out breath.

I want you to consciously slow your breathing down with each
breath you take. Breathe in through your nose; hold it for a few seconds, and
then exhale out your mouth. With each breath you take your body is becoming
relaxed and your mind is becoming more clear and focused. Breathing in through
your nose, holding it for a few seconds, and then exhaling out your mouth.

Do a self-hypnosis script

If you want to take a breathing exercise a step further you can use a self-hypnosis suggestions for actors before your audition. You can tailor the script to you and record it in advance so you can listen to the recording on the go.

I will walk into the audition room with confidence  and meet the casting director on equal terms and I will feel at ease in their presence. The moment you start to speak any nervousness will disappear completely  and you will feel completely relaxed…and completely at ease. I will become so deeply absorbed in what I am saying that I will concentrate on this to the complete exclusion of anything else. Because of this I will remain focused and relaxed…perfectly calm and confident.

I am  now becoming
calm, relaxed and at ease ready for my audition. I feel that I can handle everything in my life. I feel calm, strong and
confident.

Rest here a few
moments…
